Lesson four in the scheme of work for year 9 art consists of them using stencils & applying paint. In this lesson they primarily focus on applying one colour to the stencil so that the students become more familiar with the technique, prior to learning how to blend multiple colours together in the following lesson.
To prepare for this lesson, I cut the stencils using a craft knife as some students in year 9 can display some challenging behaviour. This was time consuming, but allowed for more time during the lesson to demonstrate the technique to the students and enabled them to practice the stenciling skills thoroughly.
Below are examples from this lesson, where the students have created stencils for the themes Insects and Monsters.
