Photography step by steps

To support students doing GCSE & A Level photography, I have been creating step by step videos to support the students visually. This particular example looks at creating a glitch style portrait using a portrait photograph & QR code image.

Below is the final image. The video demonstrates visually how to create this image using Photoshop.

Year 12 - Formal Elements

This half term, we have been planning a short 'formal elements' project for the year 12 photography classes. This enables the students to develop their skills and knowledge when applying the formal elements to their work.

When planning the lessons, we decided to split planning between myself and another photography teacher within the department. I chose to focus on Colour, Tone and Texture for the formal elements.

Within these I planned engaging activities that allow the student's to work both inside and outside of the classroom.

I have incorporated activities including students creating their own colour collection outdoors, completing a domestic foraging activity, using low key lighting and creating their own textures using paper.

Below are screenshots of the PowerPoints I have created for these mini projects.

Year 13 1:1s

In online lessons with year 13, I have been conducting 1:1 sessions with the students alongside their other subject teacher.

When speaking to the students I catch up with them as to where they are with their work & how they are getting along. I then support them by going through the tasks they need to complete to move forward with the project and making suggestions as to how they can develop their project.

These 1:1 sessions allow me to establish good relationships with the students, gain a good understanding of their projects and their needs, whilst supporting them through their developments.

I then follow up these 1:1 sessions by emailing the students notes from their session. Below are two examples of emails I have sent (to the same student) from different 1:1 sessions.

Skateboard Project - Own Creatures

During lockdown, the students in year 9 art have been asked to design their own characters for the skateboard/surfboard project they have been working on.

These creatures were inspired by their chosen artist - either Jimbo Phillips, Chris Ryniak or John Kenn Mortensen. Below are some examples of excellent pieces of work by year 9 throughout lockdown.

Sweets SOW Lesson 2

This week I started the sweets/food project with my year 9 art classes. I chose to do this to give them a 'fresh start' coming back from the recent lockdown.

In Lesson 2 - the students are asked to create an artist research page for British artist Sarah Graham. I have started to create the PowerPoints for the scheme of work so that each lesson has levelled success criteria with visual examples, learning objectives & outcomes as well as tiered vocabulary.

Below is a copy of the main slide from the lesson, along with an example artist page that I created. I did this to show students what they can achieve when creating an artist research page and to set high expectations for the lesson.

In this lesson I also provided the students with resources to create their artist page. This includes printed photographs of the artist's work, along with an analysis support page - providing the students with a range of questions they can answer to complete their artist research.

Y7 Pattern Photography

In a recent online lesson - I set a task for year 7 students to create a series of repeating and symmetrical patterns using the editing website Photopea.

I created two tutorial videos, demonstrating to students how to create these remotely so that I could scaffold and support their learning - whilst encouraging students to ask questions if they were finding the activity difficult at any point.

Below are some of the outcomes from this pattern lesson.

Y7 Scavenger Hunt

Now that we are back in the classroom, I chose to organize a Scavenger Hunt task for the year 7 photographers. I did this as I thought it would be a nice introductory task coming back to school, where they all take photographs of different objects around school.

The students worked in groups to collect as many images of different objects as they could and if the groups managed to capture more than 20 different objects in photographs, they were awarded a commendation on class charts.
