Year 9 SOW

Over half term, I have been writing a new scheme of work for year 9 art. This year group is particularly challenging in terms of engagement & behaviour. The year group is also predominantly male - so there are more boys than girls.

To combat these issues regarding engagement and motivation with the boys in particular, I agreed with my Head of Department to devise a scheme of work based around Skateboard/Surfboard design. Within this, the students will have more elements of choice around what themes they use. They will have the opportunity to choose what artist they study, what theme they use for their skateboards & then how they design the backgrounds. This will provide the students with more ownership over their work & allow them to choose something of interest to them. This will also then cater towards the girls in the groups as they can choose something that will suit their individual interests as well as provide a solution to the boy's engagement.

Below is a copy of the scheme of work I have started to write. The red row is an activity where the students are introduced to a new artist. This being John Kenn Mortensen, where the student study his work and create a visual artist study using Post It notes. I have also created PowerPoint presentations to coincide with the scheme of work ready to return in November.

Any yellow rows are scheduled homework tasks that the student's will be given & green rows represent weeks where the students will have DIRT lessons (designated improvement & reflection time).
